Fruit Valley is Vancouver’s westernmost neighborhood — and its largest by land — wedged between the Port of Vancouver, the Columbia River and Vancouver Lake. It’s an unusual mix: mostly industrial land with islands of older, affordable homes, and one of the most distinctive histories in the city.
The neighborhood boomed during World War II, when the Vancouver Housing Authority built hundreds of homes here for Kaiser Shipyard workers. After the 1948 Vanport flood forced evacuations, residents formed a neighborhood association in 1949 and raised money to build a dike that still protects the low-lying area today. That self-reliant, tight-knit spirit endures.
For buyers, Fruit Valley offers some of Vancouver’s lowest-cost housing and quick access to downtown, the lake and the river — with the honest trade-off of living right alongside heavy industry.
