A Roller Coaster Ride Through Western Art with Stephen Hayes

Join me for a fun and fascinating celebration of western art. Learn what’s motivated artists through the centuries while exploring hidden facts and details not mentioned in stuffy art lectures! We’ll examine one of the worlds most famous paintings and probe its secret joke- one of the figures is shown having his brains blown out! You’ll learn which famous painter was sentenced to death for committing murder, why another is nicknamed the Steven Spielberg of the seventeenth century, and how a masterpiece resulted when a painter went into hiding after being intimate with his beautiful young aunt. We’ll explore fundamental topics like: What is art? Who gets to decide what art is? and Can art be anything? At the conclusion of this lecture you’ll be as disappointed as I am that Jeopardy contestants are so hesitant to pick art categories, and you might learn you don’t need to be ashamed of liking that painting of dogs playing poker!

Stephen Hayes is a retired PNCA art professor. He also taught at the Art Institute of Portland. These days he paints full-time.

Please let us know if you are planning to attend, so we can make sure there is plenty of room for everyone who wants to attend.
